Activating Brain's "Safety Circuit" Can Buffer Against Stress
Researchers have recently discovered a "safety circuit" in the brain which, when activated, helps buffer against stressful and anxiety-provoking events. Psychologist and author Bob Murray, PhD., says that this mechanism is important in healing and preventing depression and anxiety and can be achieved through safe, supportive relationships. An Alternative to Antidepressants?
While commonly prescribed antidepressants, SSRIs, are coming under scrutiny for being ineffective and unsafe, psychotherapy and even hospital treatment programs are expensive and have mixed results, a new program is showing very promising results. The Uplift Program is reporting a 94% success rate as long as two years afterwards. (14 Jan 2005)
